Mrs. Burton
Instructor: Mrs. Burton
Welcome to the Literacy Intervention webpage.  This is my 4th year teaching at Ackerman and I enjoy working with students in Kindergarten through 3rd grade.  This year we will have a school-wide focus on implementing reading comprehension strategies.  Most of our research will be based on the book Strategies That Work written by Stephanie Harvey and Anne Goudvis.  Our strategy instruction will emphasize monitoring our comprehension while reading, connecting to our background knowledge, asking questions, visualizing, making inferences, determining importance, and summarizing.  This year will surely by "The Best Year Yet!".

Ackerman Readers
Ackerman Readers is our at-home reading incentive program.  This year the program will incorporate elements of the Iditarod race.  Each classroom will work as a team to read 1049 hours before the start of the actual Iditarod race in March.  Students will complete monthly reading logs to earn mileage for their classroom team.  Along the race students will earn individual and team incentives.  We are very excited to make this year, "The Best Year Yet!".

The race will kick-off in September and make sure to purchase your Ackerman Readers race t-shirt.

Bookroom
This summer our bookroom at Ackerman was revamped to add an additional 300 book titles.  Through the support of our Ackerman PTO we have been able to purchase additional materials to add to our current inventory.  A special thank you to the PTO for helping us fund this project.  The teachers and students enjoy using the books for guided reading instruction and independent reading in their classroom book boxes.
